Glam it Up

Did anyone else see this?

For those of you who didn't, that's Venus Williams at the French Open the other day. Now, I've never been a huge tennis fan (I can't even tell you if Venus is the older or younger of the Williams sisters) but I LOVE this! Here is a professional, elite, strong woman athlete who decided to be a little pretty and wear a lil' lace thing for her opening match. Nothin' wrong with that!

This is one of those things that I used to scoff at as well. Who gets all prettied-up just to get all sweaty and nasty, anyway? Then I spent a couple of months in the desert. When I first arrived and saw all the pretty little Air Force girls in the bathroom with their blow dryers and eye-liner, I was judgey-ms.judgster. Where did these girls think they were, anyway? Perhaps no on else noticed that we were in the bowels of hell and not headed to the mall.

I lasted about 3 weeks before calling and emailing my mom and my best girlfriend to send me makeup, lotion, pretty underwear, anything to make me feel pretty again - like a girl again. Because, after all, I am a girl and there's nothing wrong with wanting to feel like one - even if you're in the desert. Even if you're competing in the French Open. Even if you're out for a run with your dogs.

Now, I have yet to engage in any "pretty running" yet. (Up at 5 a.m. and "no frills", remember?) But I think I might give it a try sometime. Especially since Gwen Stefani said she always wears her signature red lipstick - even while running (another reason to love her - she runs!). And hey, in this girl's opinion if Gwen Stefani does it, it's at least worth a shot.

I'll make sure to capture the moment when I do decide to go "pretty running" and share it with you here. Who knows? Maybe I'll like it! Maybe red lipstick will help me run 26.2 miles faster? What do you think?

  4. I so adore you for embracing the pretty even when a task can make a girl feel less than pretty! It seems the Williams sisters realized that the grunting and sweating in tennis needed to be balanced by feminine touches, so I definitely advocate lace and ruffles in athletic attire :) I anxiously await your review of running skirts, because theoretically, it seems like a fabulous idea. As long as you aren't running in a sketchy neighborhood (which is where I live, hah!) I didn't know that Gwen Stefani was a runner, but it so does not surprise me. That lady is superwoman, and it's no coincidence that she's your heroine <3
